For the third year in a row, 1,000 Livingston County summer recreation kids got moving at the same time during the HIP HOP-ping Across Livingston County event—highlighting the importance of physical activity in our lives.
The Surgeon General recommends that children engage in physical activity for one hour every day. Research shows that childhood weight gain is now greater during the summer months than during the school year, but Livingston County youth recreation programming helps t
o combat the reasons for that through activities that promote physical activity and give structure to children’s days.
The Noyes Hospital Healthy Heart program donated 1,000 frisbees to these children to encourage them to look at different ways in which they can move and be active, both in groups and at home on their own. This will help each child incorporate physical activity into his or her daily lifestyle. Additional support was provided by the Livingston County Department of Health, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Youth Bureau, and the Genesee Valley Health Partnership.
